DOE, RTI to Design and Build Coal Syngas Cleanup System for IGCC Power Plants to Reduce Cost of Removing Contaminants, Capturing CO2; Potential for Synthetic Chemicals and Fuels

Extending a relationship of more than a decade, the US Department of Energy (DOE) and Research Triangle Institute (RTI) International will collaborate on a project designed to advance the development of coal power plants with near-zero emissions by reducing the cost and improving the efficiency of capturing CO2 and removing contaminants from syngas derived from coal.

More funding urged to raise the production of transportation fuels from coal

An early draft of a new report from America’s National Academy of Sciences (NAS) urges the federal government to ramp up funding to support the development and deployment of technologies that can help transform coal into liquid transportation fuels.

Canadian Company Acquiring Coal-To-Liquids Company

A Canadian company is acquiring the Australian energy firm that has proposed a $7.4 billion coal-to-liquids plant on Montana’s Crow Indian Reservation.

Posco (NYSE:PKX) and SK Energy to invest for coal conversion

South Korea’s POSCO (005490.KS) and SK Energy (096770.KS) will spend 3.35 trillion won ($2.69 billion) to convert coal to synthetic natural gas, chemicals and liquid for the first time in Korea to reduce its oil and gas imports, joining oil majors in investing in such new technology.
